Team G - VERY NICE (아주 NICE) Review

Hi! Welcome to my Boys Planet performance reviews!

Just in case you don't know what Boys Planet is, here's a quick summary:

Boys Planet is a Korean idol survival show where 98 male k-pop idol trainees are put into groups and have to compete against each other through performances. Throughout the show, the trainess have to show off to the watchers and gain their votes in order to not be eliminated. In the end, the top 9 most voted trainees are able to debut as a group.

At the beginning, there are 2 groups: Team K and Team G. Team K only has members who are of Korean ethnicity and live in South Korea, while Team G has members who are from other countries such as China, America, Japan, and more.

The first performance I'm going to be reviewing is the Very Nice (아주 NICE) performance by Team G.

----

First, I'll start off with Team G's performance of VERY NICE by SEVENTEEN. You can watch it here: Team G - VERY NICE

My roommate said that it doesn't have a very strong start- however I think it started off fine. It wasn't a start that gives you a heart attack nor an intro where you don't even notice it started, but it was like one that makes you go "Yay! It's starting!" when Cong starts off with the first verse.

The beginning choreography is fine- they've all managed to learn the choreography and it looks good. The only thing that bugs me is that they don't move in sync. Moving in sync may not seem that important at first glance, especially for casual viewers, but it's really important to keep the dance moves in sync especially if they're doing the same dance moves because it creates a better visual and keeps everyone in the right place.

At 0:18, the singer isn't really off-key at this part, but you can tell that his voice sounds weak and unstable, especially near the end. He makes it look like nothing happened by not hiding away or making any reaction from it though, so that's a good thing! My music directors always told me to never make a face when we mess up when we perform at a concert because we don't want it to be obvious to the audience. The rapper who comes after, Ma Jing Xiang, covers up his weak voice with a strong heavy bar so it's quickly pushed aside.

However, exactly right after the rap is a part where a different singer's voice cracks. This one is very noticeable, and it happens twice throughout his line. It's a shame because I think he could've done well if he was able to reach those high pitches. 😢 Cong's part afterwards also has a similar effect to Ma Jing Xiang's rap, where you are surprised by how good it is, but I don't think it's good enough to cover up the voice cracks.

Reaching the chorus, the intro to the main part was not very strong. The singer at 0:40 had a quite unstable voice, making the beat drop feel weak and unimpressive. I really liked how they were all in sync at the chorus though! Both their dancing and the "아주 (Aju) NICE!" shout were in sync and made me cheer! They practiced really hard at this part! It's the most catchy and important part of the song, after all.

Next, I have no complaints for the rap part! I think all the rappers had a great flow and it moved really nicely! I think the "맞아 (Maja)!" part was really cute in my opinion! Afterwards, the vocals get a little weak though. It sounds like they got tired from the chorus.

At 1:25, the part where they jump out of the scene is not as cute or energetic as I want it to be! That's a little disappointing because I was expecting them to hop out like a bunny, but they do seem tired at this point which is understandable.

After that, the vocalist seems to have realized that last time it was way too high for his voice to read, thus making a slight effort to reach it but not all the way. It makes the song sound kind of sad and flat, in my opinion. It's not very noticeable but I think it makes a big difference if you listen closely. But right after that, Cong's vocals come in and wipe it away. I think Cong was the best idol in this performance!

1:38 is one of my favorite parts! Cong shows off his crazy voice range. While high notes are not always a good thing, it's so impressive how effortlessly he reached those notes. Let's go, Cong!

All in all, I thought this performance was pretty good! During my first watch, I was really surprised at the quality they were able to offer despite only practicing for a short period of time. (I think it was about 2 weeks?) As I kept rewatching it though, I noticed a lot more mistakes and found it to be not as great as I remembered it first being. Maybe now that I've watched more performances from Boys Planet, I have higher expectations and this one did not reach it. This was one of the first performances in the show though, so I think it makes sense that they aren't performing at a professional level. They're all still trainees after all.

I would rate Team G's performance of VERY NICE a 7/10! It was good, but I definitely think it could have been improved. Cong was the brightest star in this performance in my eyes!

That's all for my review of Team G's VERY NICE performance! It was VERY NICE! 😆

Next up will be my review on Team K's performance of VERY NICE. I'll also be saying which version I prefer more!

Thank you for reading! I hope you give Boys Planet a watch!
